Back to school Tuesday

Posting a little late...

Trying something new today.  I bought thermos cups to keep food hot, and sent the kids to school with leftover rice pasta, kidney beans, ground turkey, tomatoes, and spices.  They said it was still hot when they opened the containers for lunch.  I also sent along carrot sticks and applesauce, even though I knew there was a ton of food in those thermos cups.

Oops, lunch is actually served on days with 11:45am dismissals

Yesterday, I was that parent.  The one who didn't pack lunches for her two kids with food intolerances because I thought lunch wouldn't be served.  Silly me.
Luckily, I did pack gluten free oatmeal and gluten free cornbread for the kids as they were having a Thanksgiving feast at school.
Today, I packed ;-)
Egg salad, GF crackers, mixed nuts, carrots, clementine, popcorn.

Thursday lunch

Recently, while grocery shopping by myself, I stumbled across this little gem:
And I was immediately so excited for B, as it's been YEARS since he's eaten pizza as I hate baking.  This is new in our regular grocery store- gluten, soy, and dairy free pizza!
He ate it for dinner and asked for the rest of it in his lunch the next day, so I obliged.
Daiya brand gluten, soy, dairy, and egg free pizza.  Half of a GF granola bar, mixed nuts.  Apple slices.  Pickles, cucumbers, carrots.

Wednesday lunch, a bit late

Almost the same as Tuesday.  The kids were on an egg salad kick.  Egg salad, GF crackers, mixed nuts, sunflower seeds.  Apple slices.  Mustard for dipping, tomatoes, cucumbers.

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

The applesauce doesn't fit in the box, but it does fit perfectly in an outer pouch on the carry bag, next to the thermos pouch.

Field trip day!

No cute planet boxes today!  All 3 of my kids will be on a field trip today and needed a disposable lunch.  This will be the first time C eats lunch with his schoolmates, as he is in a half day program normally.
Anyway, in the sack lunches are mini bottles of water, GF granola bars, GF cornbread that I made last night, sliced apples, and sunbutter with jelly on GF bread.  C is not gluten free, so he has a regular granola bar, and regular bread for his sandwich.

Wednesday, a day late

Wednesday's lunch: last of the leftover chicken legs, GF crackers, hummus.  Strawberries and grapes.  Mixed nuts and veggie straws.  Pickles and tomatoes.  Dried pineapple in the middle.

Sunbutter & jelly on GF bread.  Hummus for dipping.  Pickles, celery sticks.  Carrots, cucumbers.  Applesauce pouch.  The applesauce pouch doesn't fit in the box, but there is a pocket on the front of the carrying case that we put it in, next to his thermos.

Lazy Mom's Breakfast

We are out of fresh fruit, and eggs take about 5 minutes to cook, so, when I am feeling like I don't have time to make oatmeal or hard boiled eggs, etc.  This is what they get:

2 fried eggs, rice cake w/ jelly, pears in juice, and a glass of almond milk.
TGIF.  I am ready for the weekend!

Thursday, 10/16

Similar lunch to yesterday.  Soppressata, half a hard boiled egg, kalamata olives.  Veggie straws.  GF roasted red pepper crackers.  Orange slices, carrots.

TGIF Lunch!

TGIF!  Friday means I get a 2 day break from packing lunches.
Today's lunch: ring bologna, roasted red pepper brown rice crackers, hummus.  Butternut squash.  Celery sticks.  Diced pear, tomatoes.  Nuts in the middle.  A fork gets thrown ontop of the pears/tomatoes before I close it so they can eat the squash.  M's lunch has regular crackers in it instead of GF.

Breakfast was a banana, a bowl of Kashi Indigo Morning with almond milk, a couple slices of turkey bacon, and a glass of water.

Busy morning

Today's lunch-- sunbutter and jelly between 2 rice cakes.  Strawberries and orange slices.  Leftover butternut squash.  Carrots, cucumbers, and pickles.

It was a night of very little sleep, and a morning full of weirdness for the kids.  I'm happy I had all of this stuff on hand today to pack them a suitable lunch.  There are definitely days when they've gotten sunbutter & jelly, veggie straws, and fruit because I am too tired/lazy/unprepared to pack anything else.
I see a trip to costco in my future today.

Sampling of September lunches

Above is a small sampling of the lunches I packed in September.  M is in a peanut free classroom, so anything that looks like peanut butter is actually sun butter--the kids love it!  They also really enjoy it when I make apple coleslaw or potato salad JUST for their lunches. And, as you can see, they love cherry tomatoes.  Everything in the picture above is gluten, soy, and dairy free.

Today's lunch

Today's lunch is actually dinner leftovers.  I didn't know what to make for dinner last night, so I just started throwing stuff in a pot.  Diced tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, navy beans, black beans, corn, a very small amount of sausage, and lots of cumin, salt, pepper, chili powder!  Next container is cucumbers and tomatoes.  Pickles and strawberries.  Rice up top.  This is the specific lunch B asked for, believe it or not.  He LOVES eating cold leftovers in his lunch.  I throw a fork on top of the rice, and he knows to bring everything home--he shouldn't visit the trashcan at all during lunch!
M is having a school lunch tomorrow, because it is cheese pizza day.  This usually happens twice a month, and she loves buying school lunch.  I pack her a chocolate almond milk so she's not tempted to get the chocolate milk that comes with the lunch.

Today's meals

Pictured above is the lunch my kids went to school with.  This is my son, B's, lunch.  My daughter's lunch is the same, except she does not have the gluten free crackers that B has--she has regular crackers.  So, starting in the big compartment-- 1/2 hard boiled egg, 4 slices of ring bologna, gluten free crackers.  Strawberries.  Celery sticks w/ sunbutter and craisins, and sunflower seeds.  Tomatoes and cucumbers.  This is packed in a planet box, and I stick a stainless thermos of water in the front pocket.

Breakfast this morning was a banana, seasoned black beans, a V8, water, and a bowl of kix with almond milk.

Welcome!

I figured my facebook friends are tired of me posting pictures of my kids' lunches every day, and I'm transferring over to this blog.
I post the pictures with descriptions mainly for me, as I am positive that I will hit a "lunch slump" in the middle of the school year and not know what to make.  But also, since everything is now in a blog, I can post about dinners and breakfasts and snacks, too, without feeling like I am clogging up everyone's newsfeed with my food posts, lol.  I definitely grow weary of cooking gluten, soy, and dairy free dinners, so this blog hopefully will help with that, as well.
And, I have definitely had plenty of people ask me what in the world we feed our kids, especially our son, if he can't have gluten, soy, or dairy.  It's funny to me, because I know people with way more food allergies than just those 3, but to parents who have kids with no allergies, it can seem like an insurmountable task to cut those 3 things out of their child's diet.
